People were bringing little children to Jesus to have Him touch them,
but the disciples rebuked them.
When Jesus saw this, He was indignant.
He said to them,
"Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them,
for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.
I tell you the truth, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God
like a little child will never enter it."
And He took the children in His arms,
put His hands on them and blessed them.
Mark 10:13-16
Some days I sit and marvel at my children. One minute they are the other's worst enemy and the next they are the best of friends. If I give AJ something he makes sure his sister gets a share of it as well. And the question I ask myself is, "What happens between childhood and adulthood that makes us so untrusting of one another and selfish?" Children have short-term memories when it comes to keeping a record of wrongs. Children are very caring of one another. Ever notice how empathetic they are when they see another child crying? Children have very forgiving and trusting hearts.
When Jesus said that we must be like children, He meant that we must have the heart of a child. We must be compassionate toward one another, bearing each other's burdens. We must learn to trust one another and share with one another. We must learn to put the needs of others before our very own.
We can learn so much from children. It saddens me that some of us have gotten to the point where we think that we cannot learn from someone who is younger than us. But maybe its time to sit and watch children interact with other children with notebook and pen in hand so that we can see purity and innocence once again.
The kingdom of God is made of those who have the heart of a child.
What kind of heart do you have?
